85/110 days. [Pre-1875.] In the hills and hollows of Virginia this corn is still appreciated as a roasting and hominy corn. It is considered the best variety for hominy because the skin of the kernel is easily removed by soaking. Also good for grits, corn meal and flour. Makes a nice roasting corn (the old fashioned way of eating corn on the cob). To roast corn preheat oven to 375-400oF, or prepare a good bed of coals. Husk young ears, remove silk, replace husk, fill husk with water, drain, twist husk closed, and bake about 25 minutes. Alternatively: husk completely, rub with butter, salt and pepper, foil wrap, and roast. This variety grows extremely tall. Our stalks reach 12'. Some people use this variety for providing support for pole beans. Produces about 2 ears per stalk. Ears have very large flat white kernels. Husks are tighter than most varieties and give excellent protection from beetles and earworm. Has good tolerance to northern leaf blights (H. turicum) and southern leaf blight (H. maydis). Pkt.

85/110 days. [Dates back to the 1840's, when it originated as a cross between 'Gordon Hopkins', a late, light red variety, and an early yellow flint variety. The cross was accidental: Robert Reid had a poor stand of 'Gordon Hopkins' one year and replanted the missing hills with the early yellow flint corn. He grew the hybrid until it stabílized.] Reid's Yellow Dent is one of the most productive, hardy corns ever developed, and was a prize winner at the 1893 World's Fair and progenitor of a number of yellow dent lines. This old-timer is well known in the Mid-Atlantic region, where it is revered for its adaptability and dependability in southern heat and soils. 7' stalks with 9" double ears well-filled with 16 rows of deep, close-set, moderately flat seed. 120 days. [Pre-1900. The date is uncertain since Tennessee farmers referred to several red cob, white dent corns as 'Tennessee Red Cob'; however this seed came from the University of Tennessee. Seed generously supplied by VA extension agent Harold Jerrell.] Tall, sturdy stalks often used to support pole beans. Medium-large ears are borne one per stalk. Mr. Jerrell reported that in 1995 this variety produced a good crop on only 2" of rain from mid-June until the first of September. It was one of the driest years on record in his growing area in Virginia, and was the only variety that produced. Makes great corn bread as well as attractive corn cob pipes. Pkt.

Some all-red and all-blue ears along with an array of purple, white, and painted orange kernels. Ears are a mixed rainbow of red, brown, yellow, and sometimes purple. 9-12” ears in tightly wrapped husks. Rough milled this is a nutritious feed for your flock, or the corn can be ground into a meal with rich flavor and unusual color. CULTURE: Dent corns are generally best adapted to the Southeast and Midwest and are used primarily for roasting ears, corn bread, and hominy. Some old timers actually prefer eating the starchy dent corns in the same manner as sweet corns. Perhaps this practice may be attributed to the insect resistance of the tight husks of many dent corns. Two maturity dates may be given for dent corn; the first is number of days to maturity for use as roasting ears. The second date is the number of days for use as meal, grits, or hominy.
