| KOHLRABI (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) Kohlrabi is grown for its bulbous stem and its leaves which can be eaten raw in salads, or cooked. Kohlrabi stores very well when refrigerated. CULTURE: Grow kohlrabi in the spring or fall since it does best in cool weather. Sow seed 1/4" deep to be thinned to 5" apart in rows 12" apart. HARVEST: When roots are 2" in diameter or smaller. SOLAR GREENHOUSE NOTES: Any variety of kohlrabi does well in the solar greenhouse in the spring, fall, and winter. Purple varieties have more flavor, are less susceptible to cracking of the bulb, and are more insect tolerant, but grow more slowly. SEED SAVERS: See Broccoli section.
