50 Days. Germinates well in cool soil. [Known prior to 1850, introduced in 1897 by Peter Henderson and Co. Improved in 1933 as 'Stringless Black Valentine' by crossing 'Pencil Pod Black Wax' with 'Black Valentine'.] Outstanding features of 'Black Valentine' are its hardiness, dependability under adverse conditions, and resistance to bean mosaic. Tall, spreading plants yield dark green pods, 6 to 6 1/2", slightly flattened, and stringless. 'Black Valentine' is especially flavorful as a snap bean in vegetable soups.
