Ocimum species LAMIACEAE [Available for a limited time only, courtesy of SESE founder Dr. Jeff H. McCormack's Garden Medicinals] Said to be the result of a natural hybrid between O. canum and O. basilicum. This is a wild basil growing in the Zulu, Natal area of South Africa. It may be closely related to Spice Basil, but its scent is different and stronger. Zulu Basil has a zesty sweet, clove-like fragrance with spicy overtones and a trace of anise. The leaves are best used for teas or in deserts. The bushy compact plants grow 12 to 18" tall bearing lavender-pink flowers. The leaves (including petiole) are about 2" long with serrated edges with sparse leaf hairs above and dense leaf hairs below. Collected for us by Godofredo Guedes during a 1990 trip to South Africa.
