Gigant Winter Kohlrabi
Gigant Winter Kohlrabi

Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes

Kohlrabi is grown for its bulbous stem and its leaves which can be eaten raw in salads, or cooked. Kohlrabi stores very well when refrigerated.

How to Grow: Grow kohlrabi in the spring or fall since it does best in cool weather. Sow seed 1/4 in. deep to be thinned to 5 in. apart in rows 12 in. apart. See Cabbage section for additional cultural notes.

Harvest: When roots are 2 in. in diameter or smaller except as noted.

Greenhouse Notes: Any variety of kohlrabi does well in the solar greenhouse in the spring, fall, and winter. Purple varieties have more flavor, are less susceptible to cracking of the bulb, and are more insect tolerant, but grow more slowly.

Insects and Disease: Fairly resistant to insects and disease. Cabbage worms can be controlled with Bt.

Seed Savers: Kohlrabi will cross with broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and some kale. Isolate by 1/8 mile for home use. For pure seed of small plantings isolate by 1/4 to 1/2 mile.

Packet: 4g unless stated (approximately 1275 seeds) sows 135’.
