Rutabaga Growing Guide
Brassica napus var. napobrassica
|
How to Grow: Rutabaga are similar to turnips, but plant for fall harvest. Plant 8-10 weeks before first fall frost, seeding 1" apart in rows 12-16" apart, thinning to 8" apart. Thin within a month–crowded seedlings won’t bulb properly.
Harvest: Harvest when roots are 3-6" across. Harvest before temperatures drop below 20 degrees F
Cooking: Mash rutabagas and potatoes together for a hearty dish.
Seed Savers: Crosses with B. napus varieties of Kale and with some canola.
Packet: 2g (approximately 900 seeds) sows 46’.
