St. Patrick's Day is our traditional day to put potatoes in the ground, and we're also busy this month with making our last minute spring plantings: there is just enough time for peas, broccoli, and kale to make a good crop before hot weather hits. We're also sowing our main crop tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, and ground cherries, in flats in the greenhouse. |
Grow your own staples with Sweet Potato slips & Seed Potatoes
Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes are spring-shipped seasonal items: order now to receive your slips and roots this spring.
- Sweet Potatoes thrive throughout the United States, anywhere with at least 4 months of frost-free growing season. Simply transplant your purchased slips (the green shoots) out to the garden. We provide a free online Sweet Potato Growing Guide. To get started growing your own slips, see our new post on sprouting sweet potatoes. Our Certified Organic sweet potato slips ship from our farm mid-May through early June.
- Potatoes aren't just for farmers: even small gardens can produce bountiful potato crops. Increase your yields by hilling or trenching, or try a potato box: build the box higher around the plants as they grow, so you can effectively "hill" the plants higher. You can find great growing tips in this interview with our grower Jim Gerritsen. Our Certified Organic Irish-type Seed Potatoes ship directly from our grower’s farm beginning in March.
